Using ChatGPT in the Math Classroom: A Helpful Tool for Teachers and Students

by Dan Bungert, Region 3 Director

In writing an article about generative AI in the classroom, I thought it would be fun to let AI do most of the work! I fed ChatGPT the prompt: “Can you write a short article about how to use ChatGPT in the math classroom? Include the following: Check your work as you create answer keys, create another version of a problem for a test, for students to get extra practice by having it generate problems similar to those in class and check answers with solutions. Remind the reader that it can make mistakes and is a great opportunity to check work and analyze answers for reasonableness.” After some additional prompting to adjust the length and edit some content, here is what I got:

Incorporating ChatGPT into the math classroom can save time, enhance learning, and support both teaching and student practice. Here are a few ways to use ChatGPT effectively:

1. Check Your Work While Creating Answer Keys

As you create answer keys, you can use ChatGPT to verify calculations and steps. It can help catch mistakes, but always double-check the results, as it can still make errors.

2. Generate Variations of Problems for Tests or Quizzes

ChatGPT can quickly generate similar problems based on the ones you’re teaching. This is useful for creating alternate versions of tests or giving students additional practice on the same concept.

3. Offer Extra Practice to Students

If students need more practice, ask ChatGPT to generate problems similar to those covered in class. It can also provide step-by-step solutions, helping students better understand the process.

4. Check Answers for Reasonableness

Students can input their answers into ChatGPT to check if they make sense. ChatGPT can offer feedback and step-by-step solutions, helping students identify and fix mistakes.

A Tool for All Levels of Mathematics

ChatGPT can be helpful at any level, from basic arithmetic to Calculus and Statistics. If you’re unsure how to use it, just try asking it to solve a problem or explain a concept. You may be surprised by the insights it provides!

ChatGPT is a powerful resource for both teachers and students, offering a way to practice, check work, and explore math concepts. Just remember to use it alongside critical thinking and careful review.
