Message from MCTM President
Happy December!
As we enter this bustling and festive time of year, we find ourselves reconnecting with family and friends. This often invites the meaningful question, “What’s new with you?” As mathematics educators, it’s an exciting opportunity to reflect on the positive changes that are taking place..
One transformation is the beginning stages of the implementation of the 2022 MN math standards. This aligns perfectly with the recent release of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ groundbreaking book, “High School Mathematics Reimagined, Revitalized, and Relevant.” This work presents overarching themes and recommendations suitable for all K-12 educators, aligning with the 2022 MN math standards.
The vision of a revitalized mathematics experience is clear: to align educational encounters with a mission to prepare all students for engagement, success, and increased opportunities. As noted in the introduction to the 2022 MN math standards,“Mathematics education needs to evolve with the constant cultural and technological changes in our society. The importance of math education, related to career, college and community readiness, is supported by the World Economic Forum’s The Future of Jobs Report (World Economic Forum, 2022).”
To revitalize teaching practices, we must shift towards dynamic, student-centered approaches that encourage curiosity and critical thinking. Dimension 1 of the MN math standards introduces the Standards of Mathematical Practice, focusing on processes, behaviors, and habits of mind that define mathematically proficient students. These practices are essential and must be woven into daily instruction preK-12.
Additionally, relevant learning is crucial. We must engage students in experiences that make mathematics meaningful and relevant to their lives. The 2022 MN Math Standards highlight the need for students to be curious, pose questions, and seek patterns in their world. They should be able to communicate their mathematical thinking, contribute to high-level discussions, and be persistent, flexible, collaborative, and creative problem solvers.
Our aim is for students to connect mathematics with other disciplines and real-world experiences. By fostering an understanding of mathematical concepts intertwined with cultural perspectives and traditions, we enable students to appreciate different mathematical identities connected to their lived experiences.
Your dedication and passion fuel Minnesota’s position at the forefront of innovative mathematics education. By embracing and implementing the 2022 MN math standards with integrity and enthusiasm, we cultivate the next generation of problem solvers and critical thinkers.
Thank you for your unwavering commitment to nurturing our students’ futures.
