Hello CONNECTors!
Hello CONNECTors!
It’s crazy to think that we’re already two months into the year (where does the time go?!?). That being said, it feels good that school is in full swing with routines in place, a clearer understanding of my student’s needs and strengths and conferences completed.
This year, I’ve been trying a flipped classroom model in fourth grade. It’s been a really fun experience to have students watch the lesson at home (or during another part of the day for those who don’t have access at home) and during our math block we have the entire time to work in small groups. This has increased my need for a variety of engaging activities that differentiate for all my student’s needs and strengths.
Here are some of the awesome free math apps and websites I’ve used for elementary math learning!
- Various apps from the math learning center. With these math apps available on multiple devices (iPads, chromebooks, etc) I’ve been able to reteach and emphasize the basics of number sense, place value, visualizing, geometry, time and money. I also encouraged students to create problems for each other to solve and teach each other their own strategies for solving problems.
- Freckle Math: This was a website that I used while teaching 2nd grade. Each student receives their own account and the first time they sign in they are assessed. Based on the assessment, freckle gives students various activities to practice math skills. Teachers can also assign specific standards to students to practice.
- Play Prodigy: This is a new website I started using this year and let me tell you, it is the HIGHLIGHT of my fourth graders day (I’m pretty sure they don’t even realize it’s math focused). It resembles a video game where students have a character and can play with each other on the game website. Throughout the game, they have to battle various characters and these battles are math problems. Depending on how they do with the answer, students either win the battle or have to fix their answer. This has been a great way to review fourth grade math standards and practice skills.
I hope these help you with your math interventions and enrichments in the elementary classroom. Please don’t hesitate to reach out and CONNECT with us – we are here to support each other!
