Math EdCamp 2019

Eighteen educators from around the state of Minnesota gathered at St. Cloud Tech High School on Saturday, February 23 for a Math Ed Camp.  The day was organized by the Regional Directors of MCTM in response to requests for more professional development opportunities throughout the state.  The teachers in attendance represented college students, elementary and secondary teachers, coaches, and administrators. The day began with the participants writing questions and ideas they were interested in discussing on post it notes. The post-it notes were sorted and grouped into ten topics: EL Strategies, Middle School Curriculum, Technology Programs, Differentiation, Manipulatives, Equity, Motivating and Connecting with Students, History of Math Education, Enhancing Curriculum with Activities, and Elementary Topics.  Five, forty-minute sessions were scheduled throughout the day, with a break for lunch. During each session, participants could choose from two topics or stay in the main gathering space to network with other participants. At the beginning of each session, participants designated facilitator and note-taker. It was a fantastic day of networking, learning and door prizes!

Here’s a sample of the feedback from participants –

What is one thing you liked about today’s EdCamp?

·      The collective knowledge of the group. We can always learn from our colleagues!

·      Meeting people! Being able to ask questions comfortably. Freedom to offer ideas to others. It provided    perspective of different age groups. Today made me happy 🙂

·      I loved getting to meet other MN math teachers and catching up with people I already knew.

·      That we were able to explore topics related to what I need in my classroom.

Despite less than ideal weather conditions, the day was a great success and we are looking forward to more EdCamp opportunities in the future. If you have questions or if your school is interested in hosting a Math EdCamp, contact your Regional Director.
