Be Prepared to Help More Students Succeed
Do you wish you had math interventions and dedicated support for struggling students? Partner with Minnesota Math Corps to help your students achieve!
Math Corps is a national program that uses evidence-based interventions and trained tutors to help students in grades 4-8 build fundamental math skills. Tutors work with pairs of students for 30 minutes a day, three times a week to help students build skills and get ready for algebra.
Tutors come from all walks of life. Whether recent grads with an interest in pursuing teaching as a profession or career changers and retirees — all are united in a desire to help students succeed. As AmeriCorps members, all tutors receive free training and perks including a stipend every two weeks and up to $4,200 for college tuition and student loans. Tutors commit to serve for the school year and can elect to tutor 35, 25 or 18 hours each week.
Math Corps tutor Maria Jimenez Perez was a math and science teacher in Puerto Rico. Her family relocated to Minnesota a few years ago when her husband was transferred. She heard about Math Corps from her daughter’s school and thought it would be a great way to utilize her experience and passion for helping students.
“The best part about being a tutor with Math Corps is being witness to the incredible transformation these students make,” Maria said. “At the end of the year they all say that they didn’t know math could be fun! Not only does their confidence improve, their attitude toward math changes!”
Maria isn’t the only one to observe student growth. In fact, an independent evaluation funded by the Laura and John Arnold Foundation found that Math Corps students made significantly larger gains than students who did not receive Math Corps tutoring. On average, Math Corps students were 2 times more likely to achieve math fact fluency and 2 times more likely to meet end-of-year math benchmarks!
All Minnesota schools are eligible to apply to bring Math Corps to their students. Participating schools receive:
· Evidence-Based Interventions plus assessments for benchmarking and progress monitoring
· Trained tutors to work with students 18, 25 or 35 hours per week
· Coaching & support from experts to ensure implementation fidelity and success
· A data system that allows you to track student growth
In exchange, partner schools pay a modest program fee ($1,800 per full-time tutor and $1,000 per part-time tutor), provide staff support for tutors (approx. 0.1 FTE for one tutor), and assist in identifying potential tutors in the community.
