Candidates for Region 6 Director
Jessica Fricke Current PositionKindergarten Teacher Sunset Hill Elementary Wayzata Public Schools EducationB.A. Elementary Education, College of Saint Benedict M.Ed. Education, College of Saint Catherine Goals as MCTM DirectorAbout four years ago the opportunity to serve my district as a representative on a Mathematics Review Committee and pilot a new math curriculum significantly changed me as an educator. Through the professional discussions, new practices, and time for focus and reflection on math teaching and learning, I fell in LOVE with math in a way I never imagined possible! The opportunity to serve as MCTM Director fits perfectly into this newly discovered passion for mathematics education along with my dedication to be involved in my community and grow professionally. If elected, I believe my experience with learners at the primary level will bring a unique and necessary perspective to the work of MCTM. I will seek information regarding how to effectively and efficiently provide continuous mathematics professional development for educators, especially at the elementary level. Most of all, I will bring a positive energy and commitment to learning how to best meet the needs of all mathematics learners. Education, Hamline University, 2000 Goals as MCTM DirectorWhile starting out with aspirations to be a secondary math teacher, my path unexpectedly changed to elementary which, unbeknownst to me at the time, ended up being the best thing. It was through this experience that I became well versed in how children learn mathematics. I have spent the last 7 years completely immersed in math education by serving as a Math Specialist both in Anoka Hennepin and now as a Math Coordinator in St. Cloud. I plan to use what I have learned, the coaching training I have received over the years, and my teaching experiences in elementary and middle school, to help move math education forward by supporting others in shifting from a largely procedurally taught subject to one of teaching for understanding. I would further like to collaborate with others on how to better serve the needs of our EL SLIFE students. I firmly believe that working together with members of Region 6 and the state as a whole will significantly impact student experiences in math for the better and look forward to being in a position to better take advantage of other people working towards the same goals. Finally, in an era where teachers are on overload, I want to find ways to bring great resources and professional development to them that fit into busy schedules. Professional Affiliations
