Free Artificial Intelligence Resources from IBM’s Teacher Advisor with Watson
Watson is cognitive computing (artificial intelligence) system with the capability of responding to questions through the usage of a natural language. The Watson platform was originally designed in 2011 to answer questions on the TV quiz program “Jeopardy”. The modifications of the platform between “Jeopardy” episodes led to further improvements and endeavors including medical research and education. Clinics such as Maine Clinic for Cancer Medicine, Cleveland Clinic and Westmed Group in New York have partnered with IBM. Currently Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN is using Watson for 3-D imaging for medical research.
In 2016 IBM partnered with education departments in the Eastern United States to develop “Teacher Advisor with Watson”, an initiative providing teachers of mathematics high quality, vetted, researched based, and enriched lessons, activities, and content strategies. Currently “Teacher Advisor with Contains at least 7000 open sourced resources for grades K through 5. The developers of Watson are will be updating “Teacher Advisor with Watson” in August to include resources for grades K-8. Teacher Advisor With Watson searches versus Other Internet Resources
- Watson’s enhanced searching saves time.
- Watson has been trained by math coaches to identify and recommend specific lesson and activities that emphasize hands on learning.
- Teachers may develop a personnel library to save lessons, activities and recent searches.
In the fall of 2017 IBM in Rochester and the Southeast Service Cooperative and Rochester Area Math Science Partnership (RAMSP) formed a partnership to introduce “Teacher Advisor with Watson” to Minnesota. Currently there are at least 270 users with a goal of 500 by the end of June. Register to be one of the first 500 people signed up for Teacher Advisor with Watson to for a chance to win a $500 grant for your district’s math program! To be eligible, the winning school must be a registered public school or operate with a valid 501c3, and the school must be willing to work with IBM and RAMSP to further leverage the Teacher Advisor resource.
