Are you interested in getting more involved in the Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics but don’t know where to get started? How about joining our MCTM Professional Practice Committee? The time commitment is not overwhelming and this is a great way to help promote good teaching standards throughout the state of Minnesota. You will start to make connections with other math teachers that love what they are doing and want to help make a difference.
Purpose: Professional Practice Committee shall promote the effective teaching and learning of meaningful mathematics for all students.
Overview: Over the course of the year, the Professional Practice Committee will meet to work on resolutions that are assigned to our committee. These resolutions come from the district meetings that are held at the MCTM Spring Conference in Duluth where teachers meet and make suggestions. The MCTM Board then assigns the resolutions to appropriate committees.
2017-2018 Resolutions Assigned to the Professional Practice Committee:
1.Be it resolved that MCTM look at existing avenues of teacher forums to share/teach the membership about. And/or pursue an avenue for an online forum for teachers to pose questions and receive comments/feedback and/or have discussions in regards to math and math education.
2. BIRT (be it resolved that), MCTM will look for ways for their membership to continue the connections that are started at this conference. This could be through virtual meetings around popular topics, regional meet-ups, webinars, could be launched in sessions at the conference where a meet up time to continue the conversation is arranged. The purpose is to encourage continued collaboration throughout the year. Additionally it is requested that MCTM provide professional development in areas of social networking.
When does the Professional Practice Committee meet?
The committee will meet after the main board meetings (around 12:30 pm) which are held on a few Saturdays during the school year. We may also meet a few other times via phone or actually getting together. The 2017-18 MCTM Board meeting dates are
Saturday, October 14, 2017
Saturday, December 2, 2017
Saturday, January 27, 2018
Please consider joining our committee and maybe even ask someone in your own math department to join with you. Help us make a difference for math students throughout the state of Minnesota.
