Moody’s Mega Math (M3) Scholarship Challenge

Since 2006, Moody’s Mega Math (M3) Challenge (http://m3challenge.siam.org) has become the online math modeling competition known for inspiring high school juniors and seniors to pursue STEM majors and careers, awarding nearly one million dollars in scholarships to date! The contest is open to U.S. students everywhere, and is endorsed by the NASSP since 2010; the contest will award scholarships totaling $150,000 this year.

In teams of three to five, participants solve a math modeling problem relevant to their lives in just 14 hours. Last year students explored emerging automobile technologies like car-sharing services and driverless vehicles to model new approaches to mobility, and the year before, participants quantified the cost, return, and value of a college education. See other past problems and samples for practice, as well as a freely downloadable handbook on getting started with math modeling at: http://m3challenge.siam.org/resources.

This announcement is a heads-up for planning purposes. Registration has not started yet for this year, but was in November last year. The website can, however, give an idea of what is involved.
