Another Diversity Tool – Podcasts

In May, MCTM President, Sara Van Der Werf challenged us to join her in Listening, Learning, Asking Questions and Listening to the Answers, as we strive to meet the learning needs of all students, especially students of color. I want to invite you join me as I eavesdrop on conversations I don’t normally hear in my white suburban world. I do my eavesdropping through two podcasts, Code Switch and Counter Stories.
Code Switch is a relatively new podcast by NPR. Their website says, “Ever find yourself in a conversation about race and identity where you just get…stuck? Code Switch can help. We’re all journalists of color, and this isn’t just the work we do. It’s the lives we lead. Sometimes, we’ll make you laugh. Other times, you’ll get uncomfortable. But we’ll always be unflinchingly honest and empathetic. Come mix it up with us.” The Code Switch podcast drops on Wednesdays and you can also follow them on Twitter, like them on Facebook, and visit their website http://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/ .
Counter Stories is a monthly podcast, produced by MPR. “We discuss race, identity, social justice and culture in a region grappling with demographic changes. With Anthony Galloway, Luz Maria Frias, Don Eubanks and Hlee Lee.” http://www.mprnews.org/topic/counter-stories The Counter Stories crew members all live in the Twin Cities area and discuss local and national issues. Listen to the podcast, follow them on Twitter, and like them on Facebook.
There’s a lot to learn friends. Let’s listen and learn together.
